My Daily Wellness Lifestyle Habits Through The Use of Essential Oils

What are Essential Oils and where do they come from?

Essential Oils are volatile compounds found in different areas of a plant such as its roots, flowers, bark, seeds etc. They are extremely potent as they are highly concentrated. Essential Oils also protect the plant from which it is derived from harsh environments as well as give the plant its aroma. The purest Essential Oil will leave its aromatic scent behind even after the bottle has been capped off.

That’s one of my personal kits.

Essential Oils throughout history:

Essential Oils have been around for centuries.

  • Rene Gattefosse, a French chemist was the first to coin the term “aromatherapy”. He researched and studied essential oils extensively in the 19th century.
  • Ancient Egyptians used essential oils for medicinal benefits, in religious ceremonies, food prep, beauty treatments, ointments as well as their burial rituals. Myrrh, cedar and frankincense were used in the mummification process.
  • In ancient Greece, Hippocrates helped spread the use of aromatic oils. He wrote, “that having a scented massage or a scented bath with essential oils was the path towards well-being and good health.” Prominent Greek physician, Pedanius Dioscorides’ reference work lists several herbal remedies. Such as the use of myrrh to help with gum infections, cypress for its usefulness in relieving diarrhea, marjoram’s sedative properties and many more.
  • Galen, another Greek was known for his reputation for never having an injured gladiator die under his care. He promoted the use of essential oils.
  • In India, Ayurvedic medicine includes the use of plants and aromatic compounds. Vedic literature lists sandalwood, cinnamon, myrrh and ginger effective for healing. Essential oils have been incorporated into healing potions for centuries in Ayur Veda, traditional Indian medicine. Ayurveda is rooted in Sanskrit, ayur means life and veda means knowledge.
  • In Ancient Rome, essential oils were used for scented baths and massages. Essential oils were used to scent the body, the hair and the beds.
  • Traditional Chinese medicine have included the use of herbs and plants for centuries.
  • In Persia, Ali-Ibn was the first to distill plant materials into oils.
  • Aromatic plants even make an appearance in the bible. One of the most well-known reference, is that frankincense and myrrh were two of the gifts the Magi brought for baby Jesus.

How Essential Oils are made:

the distillation process varies based on the type of material being used. Depending on the type of essential oil being made, different parts of a plant can be used. Such as the bark, the roots, the flowers, the seeds etc. Essential oils can also be made from resins like myrrh and frankincense.

Health benefits of Essential Oils:

Essential oils can be used to improve overall health and well-being. The use of essential oils can be tailored to a person’s specific wants and needs. Essential oils can be used to help alleviate a series of minor health concerns.

  • They can be used to create feelings of easy breathing.
  • Support oral health.
  • Promote healthy digestion.
  • Soothe minor skin irritations
  • Essential oils can even aid in weight loss.
  • Essential oils can also be used to promote emotional health.

  1. Wow, I learned so much about essential oils from this article!  I had not known about all the benefits you have listed, or a bit about the history of what essential oils have been used for throughout time.  I am kind interested in the weight loss factor 😀  Which essential oils do you use for this and is it digested or inhaled?  I would also like a good essential oil to help relieve stress.  One last question, is there an essential oil that you can add to your bath water.  Kind of for relaxing or even softening the skin?

    • doTERRA has their own line of oils that can be combined and used for weight management.  As I said before that is the brand I use because after my research, I have found them to  be the purest.

I add Tangerine oil to my water daily as well as Lemon oil throughout the day for a gentle natural cleanse.  You can use Lavender for stress relief but they also have others that can work for you too.  It all depends on the user.  I also use their Serenity blend for stress management and better sleep.

Frankincense is a great one to add to your bath water.  It not only promotes feelings of relaxation but it also help reduce the appearance of fne lines and skin imperfections.

  2. As one who believes in using natural remedies this is an excellent post, full of very useful tips, hints and advice.  Can see me reaching to check out more of this product.

As a sufferer of various aches and pains due to accidents, too much sport and getting older, think that this is ideal for those who suffer as I do, to at least give it a try.

Loved the detailed description of some of the uses of it, the drops on the pillow at night for example.

    • Glad you found my article useful.  Essential oils can not only be used as natural remedies but they can also be used as preventative remedies as well.

  3. Thanks for providing this very interesting article on essential oils. I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I am a big fan of using my essential oils in a burner as opposed to a diffuser. I love to enjoy the fragrance in my room as well as the relaxing feelings it gives me.

However a friend of mine said that using the burner reduces the effectiveness of the essential oils. Is this true?

    • Yes it’s true because the burner is heating up the oil and thereby changing its composition.  For example, uncooked rice vs cooked rice.

  4. Hi Margarette,

You’ve opened my eyes about essential oils. As a high school history teacher, I also appreciated the history lesson. You mentioned that essential oils can be used by smelling, applying to one’s skin and ingested. Would you recommend one over the other? If so, why?

I have used essential oils before, but mainly in my college days, many moons ago. Your content encouraged me to try these oils again. You made me think about the use of oil to anoint people in the church and in homes. I wonder now, whether essential oils should be used instead of Jonson & Johnson’s Baby Oil.

I appreciate your information, The topic is one that needs attention. Essential oils can help us all.

    Thanks and God bless you.

    • Personally, I use essential oils topically, internally and aromatically.  It depends on what I’m trying to achieve.

I sometimes rub Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)  topically on an area that’s aching cause doing so takes care of the immediate problem area.

But like I stated above, make sure that whatever oil brand you decide to use has the science behind them to back their claim about the pureness of their oils.

  5. Fantastic review about essential oil. I do hear essential oil from my colleagues but I do not know it is very useful like this. I am able to learn new things from this review. Am the type that do suffer indigestion,  I’m gonna try this doTERRA lemon essential oil and see how it will help me get rid of it. How many spoons is  recommended yo be use at a particular time? Is it to be consume before meal or after?

It’s calories burning also trigger my interest. Hope they are available on Amazon?

    • For indigestion I would recommend DigestZen.  They are available through amazon at a higher price than if you were to get it from a doTERRA Wellness Advocate. For help with metabolism, doTERRA has its own line, it’s called Slim & Sassy. Message me on WA for more info.

  6. I’ve used essential oils however I usually place a few drops into a diffuser for some aroma therapy. Do you know if using a diffuser has any negative effects on the oils?

    • No it does not. You’re still getting the aromatherapy benefits of the oil. I would recommend using a diffuser with your oils because ingesting them or using them topically may have negative effects if they are not 100% pure.
